“Bedroom covered in blood” leads to one dead, one critical and one in jail

ASH FLAT, Ark. – A scene of blood awaited investigators who responded to a call of a male and female who were unresponsive shortly after 12:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in Sharp County.

The news release from Sharp County Sheriff Mark Counts said county 911 received a call of a male and female unresponsive in their residence on Highway 167 south of Ash Flat. Sheriff’s deputies, Ash Flat police, Arkansas State Police, and other first responders responded to the call. When they arrived, the scene was covered in blood.

“Upon arrival at the residence, officers located both subjects in a bedroom covered in blood,” the release states. “Both victims were transported from the residence by Spring River Ambulance to MCED and later transported by helicopter to trauma centers.”

Both the male and female sustained gruesome injuries and were left to die in the home by the individual responsible. The male reportedly died of his injuries Tuesday, the Spring River Chronicle reported. His name was Mark Ballard, age unknown, of Ash Flat.

The name of the female has not been released.

During the course of the investigation, authorities developed a suspect who was located in the Lonoke area. Mark Shirley, 36, was transported back to Sharp County Jail where he is being held pending filing of formal charges. The press release said he is a “family member” of the victims.

The case is being investigated by the Sharp County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the Arkansas State Police, the release concluded.
