MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. – The sheriff of Baxter County is warning of a scam.
A release said Friday the Sheriff’s Office has received three (3) calls so far from across Arkansas from people stating that they have received a telephone call from someone purporting to be one of the Sergeants who works in the patrol division. The “Sergeant” is informing the person that there is a warrant for his or her arrest and is attempting to solicit payment by phone.
THIS IS A SCAM AND AN ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD!
There is nobody from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office making telephone calls to members of the public concerning arrest warrants or attempting to solicit or collect payments of bonds or fines by phone. Whoever is making these calls is “spoofing” the number, which makes the number appearing on Caller ID impossible to trace. The caller is able to make any number show on your Caller ID.
“We are warning and alerting people to NOT acknowledge calls of this type as legitimate and do NOT provide or verify any kind of personal information nor make any questionable payments by phone or through a money transfer service.
Should you have any questions about whether you have an outstanding warrant with the Sheriff’s Office, you can either check the warrant list on the Sheriff’s Office website or call the office at 870-425-7000 to inquire.
Thank you.”
