Police: Uber Driver Attacked 65-Year-Old Man Who Intervened After Drink Spill

JONESBORO, Ark. — An Uber driver is accused of attacking a 65-year-old man who intervened after a woman spilled a drink inside the driver’s vehicle, police said.

Stanford Wayne Wilkerson is charged with second-degree battery, a Class D felony. His bond was set at $35,000 cash or surety.

Jonesboro police responded July 10 to an assault reported on Reserve Drive, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The alleged victim told officers he was inside his apartment when he saw a neighbor leaving with Wilkerson. After the woman accidentally spilled a drink inside Wilkerson’s vehicle, Wilkerson allegedly became angry and began throwing items at her.

The man went outside to intervene. Police said Wilkerson became enraged, charged at him and pushed him into the building, causing him to fall and strike his head.

After the man stood up, Wilkerson allegedly continued the attack by striking him in the face with both hands and knocking him to the ground again. Officers reported seeing injuries to the man’s forearm, ears, nose and head.

The woman told police Wilkerson became frustrated after she spilled the drink and instructed her to get a larger towel. She said Wilkerson threw a washcloth or towel toward her but did not strike her with his fist.

She and another witness reportedly told police that Wilkerson initiated the physical confrontation and knocked the man down. Wilkerson then allegedly entered his vehicle and fled.

Because the alleged victim was 65 and suffered visible injuries, District Judge David Boling issued a warrant for Wilkerson’s arrest. Second-degree battery involving an injured person who is 60 or older is a Class D felony.

Wilkerson’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
