Woman Accused of Striking Dating Partner With Car, Chasing Him on Foot in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. — A woman faces a felony charge after police said traffic-camera footage showed her intentionally striking a man she was dating with a car before pursuing him in the vehicle and on foot.

Anteunna Smith is charged with aggravated assault on a family or household member, a Class D felony, and driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license, a misdemeanor.

Jonesboro police responded Saturday, Aug. 15, to Southwest Drive after receiving a report of a pedestrian accident, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

A witness told officers the man was walking on a sidewalk while Smith drove a silver Dodge alongside him with its hazard lights activated. The two appeared to be arguing before Smith allegedly turned the car sideways in the roadway and attempted to block his path.

When the man began running, Smith intentionally drove toward him and struck him in the roadway, the witness alleged. The man went onto the hood of the vehicle before continuing to flee on foot.

Police said Smith followed him into a parking lot, exited the Dodge and chased him across the road. The affidavit states the man ran out of his shoes as he fled.

Officers later saw Smith and the man leaving a building together. Both went back inside after seeing an officer exit a marked patrol vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Police described both as tired, out of breath and acting confused. Smith told an officer she had been attempting to make a U-turn and accidentally bumped the man.

Investigators said traffic-camera footage corroborated the witness’s account. The footage allegedly showed Smith’s vehicle cutting off the man’s path, making a U-turn in a parking lot and accelerating toward him as he ran across the street.

“It appears the victim was targeted,” the investigator wrote in the affidavit.

Police also reported that Smith’s driver’s license was suspended.

Smith’s bond was set at $35,000 cash or surety. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
