JONESBORO, Ark. — The closed section of South Main Street in downtown Jonesboro could reopen in some capacity as early as today as work continues to stabilize a building at 219 S. Main St.
City spokesman Brian Richardson said Monday evening that he and the city engineer inspected the building earlier in the day and were pleased to find stabilization efforts already underway.
Crews hope to complete the shoring, which will provide structural support to the building, as early as Tuesday. Once that work is finished, the city should be able to reopen the road in some capacity, Richardson said.
Additional cosmetic work will still be needed, but it is not expected to require the road to remain closed.
“We certainly appreciate the owner quickly taking action,” Richardson said.
The 200 block of South Main Street was closed Friday afternoon after part of the front column of the two-story building separated from the structure and fell onto the sidewalk at approximately 1:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported, but the building was evacuated while its condition was assessed. The vehicle closure extends from Huntington Avenue to Cate Avenue. Pedestrians have been permitted outside the safety-tape buffer.
