MONETTE, Ark. — A Craighead County lottery player who typically buys $5 scratch-off tickets won $200,000 after trying a $10 game for the first time.
R. Sorrells won the top prize in the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery’s Diamonds & Gold game. He claimed his prize July 13 at the lottery’s claim center, officials announced Thursday.
Sorrells purchased the winning ticket at Jordan’s Kwik Stop No. 64, located at 19888 Highway 18 E. in Monette.
“It was my first time playing Diamonds & Gold,” Sorrells told lottery officials. “I’m usually big on the $5 tickets, but I decided to try $10 games recently.”
Sorrells did not scratch the ticket immediately and instead set it aside. After winning on two other instant tickets a few days later, he returned to the Diamonds & Gold ticket.
“I started seeing all those zeros and could hardly believe it,” Sorrells said.
He first shared the news with his family. Sorrells plans to save his winnings and put some of the money toward a new vehicle.
One $200,000 top prize remains in the Diamonds & Gold game, according to the lottery.
