Poinsett County Sheriff Warns of Scam Targeting Families of Inmates

POINSETT COUNTY, Ark. — The Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving local detention center inmate rosters.

Sheriff Kevin Molder said scammers are looking up inmates online, identifying people who are currently incarcerated and contacting their family members. The caller claims to be a law enforcement officer and tells the family member the inmate can be released if money is paid immediately.

Because inmate rosters are public, scammers may use real names and other information to make the call seem legitimate, Molder said.

“Law enforcement will never call and demand money for someone’s release,” Molder said in the post.

Anyone who receives such a call is urged to hang up immediately and contact local law enforcement to report it.

Molder said many scams are circulating and encouraged residents to stay vigilant. The sheriff’s office also directed residents to the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office website for more information about scams.
