JONESBORO, Ark. — A man is accused of leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit on Nov. 17 that began in Lawrence County and ended with a crash off an Interstate 555 exit ramp, according to an Arkansas State Police incident report.
Cpl. Jeffrey Irvin said he was notified by Troop C dispatch that the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office was pursuing a black Ford Mustang traveling south on U.S. 63. Irvin positioned himself on the west shoulder near County Road 140 as the vehicle approached at a high rate of speed.
As the Mustang neared, it moved into the center turn lane to pass another southbound vehicle, the report said. Irvin activated his emergency lights and siren and began attempting to catch up.
According to the report, the driver continued south on U.S. 63 at more than 100 miles per hour, passing vehicles on the shoulder and in the center lane. The Mustang allegedly ran the red light at U.S. 63 and U.S. 63B, narrowly missing a truck turning onto the highway.
The pursuit continued onto Interstate 555, where speeds again exceeded 100 miles per hour. Near mile marker 47, the driver attempted to turn right from the left lane onto the Washington Avenue southbound exit, causing him to lose control and crash into the metal exit-ramp sign, Irvin wrote.
The vehicle came to rest before re-entering the interstate. The suspect, identified as Dillon Mitchell, born May 16, 1997, was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Craighead County Detention Center.
Mitchell faces charges of felony fleeing, DWI first, refusal to submit to a chemical test, reckless driving, speeding more than 15 miles per hour, no driver’s license, careless and prohibited driving, and disregarding a red light. A crash report was filed for damage to the Exit 47 sign.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
