JONESBORO, Ark. — A 22-year-old man is accused of shooting another man in the abdomen during a weekend fight inside a Craighead County residence.
According to the probable-cause affidavit, deputies were called at about 2:37 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, to a home on Craighead 7121 Road regarding a shooting. Investigators wrote that an argument began in Jonesboro between Michael Treat and the alleged victim, reportedly over Treat leaving the victim at the Brickhouse. Treat returned and reportedly argued with Gibson to get into a truck so they could leave.
Both men went back to the residence in Craighead County, where the argument resumed. A witness told deputies that Treat shoved the victim, who shoved him back, and the two began fighting in the living room. The altercation spilled into the kitchen and dining room, according to the report.
The witness stated that Treat then pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired one shot, striking the victim in the abdomen. Treat reportedly ran out of the house but was taken into custody by arriving officers. Additional witnesses inside the home — including a 14-year-old — supported the account of how the shooting occurred.
On Nov. 24, investigators interviewed Treat at the sheriff’s office. He admitted to being in an argument with the victim but claimed it occurred after leaving a girl’s house, according to the affidavit. Treat also admitted to having the gun and said he always carries it. During questioning, he requested an attorney, and the interview was stopped.
Michael Joseph Lee Treat, 22, of Jonesboro, is charged with first-degree battery, a Class B felony, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, a misdemeanor. District Judge Tommy Fowler set bond at $75,000 cash or surety, issued a no-contact order, and ordered that no weapons be kept in the home.
His next court date is set for Dec. 16.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
