PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould woman is facing a felony charge after police say she abandoned a puppy in an apartment for about a month, leading to the animal’s death.
According to a probable cause affidavit from the Paragould Police Department, officers were dispatched Aug. 7 to an apartment in the 2100 block of Silverwood Drive for a report of animal cruelty. Witnesses told officers they had gone to check on the puppy belonging to Kiah Muniz and found it deceased. They said Muniz had left the dog in the apartment after moving out about a month earlier.
Animal control officers responded to the scene, documented the situation with photographs, and took possession of the animal.
The following day, police interviewed witnesses, who said they had not seen Muniz check on the puppy in several weeks. They decided to look in on the dog themselves, at which point they discovered it was dead.
On Aug. 11, police interviewed Muniz, who, according to investigators, made self-incriminating statements after being read her Miranda rights.
Kiah Muniz, 20, was arrested on a charge of aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat, or equine, a Class D felony.
Judge Dan Stidham set her bail at $10,000 cash or surety and issued a no-contact order prohibiting her from having any animals or pets.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
