JONESBORO, Ark. — Each week, the City of Jonesboro releases a document detailing the weekly progress updates to the demolition of the aging former Citizen’s Bank building in downtown Jonesboro. The list shows progress the city has made each week toward the complete removal of the structure.
May 5 – May 12, 2025
· Weather dependent, asphalt and road striping to be completed by the end of the week.
· When asphalt and striping are completed, Main St. and Washington Ave. roads will temporarily be a 3-way stop, until traffic signal lights are reinstalled.
· Hanging decorative string lights are to be reinstalled on Main St. on Friday, May 9. Main St. From Huntington Ave. to Washington Ave. will be closed on Friday, May 9.
April 28 – May 4, 2025
· Sidewalk replacement is scheduled to be completed by May 2, excluding traffic signal pads.
· Asphalt paving is planned for May 5, weather permitting.
· Planters and pavers will be installed early next week.
· Sod and grass seeding will follow, expected to be finished by the end of next week.
· We are in the final countdown! We look forward to the finalization of the project very soon!
April 21 – 27, 2025
· Sidewalk replacement is underway this week.
· Asphalt overlay work is scheduled to begin next week.
· Site stabilization consisting of sod and seeding to establish grass cover to begin.
· Traffic signal reinstallation will also begin next week.
· Project completion is targeted for mid-May, contingent upon weather.
April 14 – 20, 2025
· The site plan/layout for curbs, streets, and sidewalks has been completed and submitted for review.
· Weather permitting, we anticipate the curbs, streets, and sidewalk work will be completed within the next three weeks.
· Once curb, street, and sidewalk work are complete, the City will reinstall traffic signals and complete traffic line painting.
· Following that, crews will begin final grading of the lots to ensure proper drainage. Sod and seed will then be placed to establish grass and vegetation.
April 7 – 13, 2025
· Backfilling and compacting of basement with suitable soil is scheduled for this week.
· Undercutting and backfilling beneath the 2-story building will also begin this week.
· Removal/repair of damaged parking lot and sidewalk areas is set to begin next week.
· Finalizing the site plan for upcoming street and sidewalk repairs is currently underway.
March 31 – April 6, 2025
· Demolition abatement is complete, and the project closure has been filed with ADEEQ.
· Equipment demobilization will begin on April 7, 2025. Expect intermittent closures of Union Ave. (from Monroe Ave. to Washington Ave.) on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. A detour route will be posted.
· Basement backfilling is scheduled to begin next week, weather permitting.
· Site design is in progress for repairs to streets, sidewalks, city utilities, and structures.
· Current road closures will remain in place until associated repairs are completed.
March 24-30, 2025
· Demolition has reached the first floor.
· The remaining first floor and basement demolition will continue to next week.
· Once the site is fully cleared and abated, site work and street/sidewalk repairs will begin.
· Air quality testing will continue for the duration of the demolition project.
· Debris haul-off and traffic patterns will continue throughout the project.
March 17-23, 2025
· Demolition materials from the lower 2-story building have been cleared.
· Demolition of the 7-story building section has begun.
· The upper 3-stories are scheduled for removal this week.
· Once the upper 3-stories are demolished, debris will be transported to the Legacy landfill.
· Total debris removed to date: 262 tons.
March 10-16, 2025
· Lower 2-story building has been demolished and is being removed from the site.
· Brick is being removed from the north side, followed by mechanical removal of the 7-
story structure.
· Debris haul-off and traffic patterns will continue throughout the project.
March 3-9, 2025
· All equipment and crew arrived to finish staging site.
· Scaffolding erected. Brick removal along north wall anticipated for later portion of this
week and following.
· Union Ave. partial-lane closure in effect. Full closure of Washington Ave. from Union
Ave. to Main St. begins. Main St. traffic will be able to turn right onto Washington Ave.
until further notice.
February 24 – March 2, 2025
· Heavy equipment is arriving on site and will be assembled this week.
· Site specific safety training is in progress.
· Cautionary protection for the building directly north of the demolition is in progress.
· Storm water management plans are in progress.
· Verbal confirmation from ADEEQ has been received, written notification is pending.
· A meeting was held at 9:00am on February 26 with business owners and tenants on Main St. from Washington Ave to Monroe St. to discuss the schedule and expectations.
· Demolition of the brick façade on the north face will start early next week.
· Modified traffic plan – closing a portion of Washington Ave. between Union Ave. and Main St. – as well as one lane of Union Ave. – will begin March 5, 2025.
February 17 – February 23, 2025
• Finished filling tunnel below Main St. with concrete.
• Heavy equipment and machinery have begun arriving to site.
• The parking lot at Union Ave. and Washington Ave. is closed until demolition and site repair have been completed.
February 10 – February 17, 2025
· Coordinating with asbestos abatement designer to work through ADEEQ requirements.
· Determining building protections for surrounding neighboring business owners within demolition radius.
· Pumping concrete to fill in tunnel below Main St. begins Thursday morning (February 13, 2025).
February 3 – February 9, 2025
· Continued stabilization and sealing work being done on the under-street tunnel.
· Traffic signals on Main St. & Washington Ave. are down and all-way stop signs have been installed.
· Isolation valves installed by CWL to separate the building from their utilities.
· General site prep actions will continue.
· Traffic cameras have been installed and oriented to monitor flow efficiency near the site.
· City and Nabholz continue to work with ADEEQ to satisfy the regulatory requirements for demolition.
· Working to address needs and questions from neighboring business owners that will be impacted during the demolition phase.
January 27- February 2, 2025
· Regulatory approval phase and demolition planning are ongoing.
· Currently disconnecting utilities and removing decorative streetlights.
· Removal of signal lights on Main St. & Washington Ave. end of week, with all-way stop signs installed until the streets are closed.
· Begin work sealing and stabilizing tunnel void.
· Working with adjacent businesses impacted by demolition.
1/21: City Council approves Nabholz Construction to commence contract negotiations for the demolition of the former Citizens Bank building
1/22: A meeting was held at City Hall to inform downtown business owners what to expect from now through completion of the project.
1/22: Contract negotiations were completed with Nabholz Construction.
· Meetings were held with the adjacent building owner.
· Regulatory approval phase and demolition planning are ongoing.
· Fencing is ordered and ready to be installed once demo plan is approved.
