$1 Million Bond Set for Stabbing Suspect from Sunday in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. — Police were investigating a crime scene connected to a stabbing incident Sunday evening, Sept. 29, in Jonesboro. Around 8:00 p.m., a victim with stab wounds showed up at a local hospital, according to JPD Public Information Specialist Sally Smith. With the help of witnesses, a crime scene was located at the 1400 block of Matthews Avenue, near Gee Street, with police putting up crime scene tape and investigating. Two were taken in for questioning, Smith said Sunday night. On Monday, Smith updated that several witnesses were questioned. The victim was still in the hospital as of 11 a.m. being treated for his wounds. By 3:45 p.m. on Monday, an arrest had been made, Smith said. Juan Antonio Bautista-Campos, 32, was arrested on a charge of first-degree battery, a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The probable cause affidavit released on Wednesday, Oct. 2, revealed more. Detectives were called to the scene and while processing it, located a black shirt and a knife with blood on it. Several areas of the ground in the front yard had blood spilled. Multiple alcohol bottles were found, too. The alleged victim and witnesses told police Campos stabbed the victim multiple times in the front yard in an unprovoked attack. One witness told detectives that Campos had asked to be picked up and taken to catch a bus back to Texas. The witness said Campos referenced being involved in an incident recently and wanted to leave town in a hurry. Police interviewed Campos and reported that he made incriminating statements about the incident. Judge David Boling set a $1 million cash or surety bond for Campos on Wednesday. The judge also noted there was an ICE (immigration) hold on the suspect, who may have additional charges pending. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
