JONESBORO, Ark. — A juvenile suspect is being charged as an adult in the shooting incident Sunday afternoon on Fairview Drive in Jonesboro.
Lawrence Jennings, Jr., was arrested on Sunday at a residence in the 400 block of West Forrest. Police found him hiding in the attic. Although a juvenile, Jennings is being charged as an adult, according to Sally Smith, JPD’s public information official.
The probable cause affidavit says on August 25, JPD responded to Mary Jane regarding a shooting and a male who had been shot. The crime scene was located at the 3200 block of Fairview. When the detectives arrived, they located 11 .22-caliber shell casings in front of the home. It was determined the alleged victim had been shot there and ended up on Mary Jane.
Authorities believe the alleged victim went to the residence to locate Jennings, and to diffuse an ongoing dispute between the two. However, a verbal altercation ensued. According to the affidavit, Jennings produced a firearm and as the victim and witness were trying to leave the area, Jennings began shooting at the vehicle as it was moving. There were two bullet holes in the trunk, the back window was shot out, and there were two bullet holes in the rear headrest that traveled to the front. During the gunfire, the alleged victim was struck in the left shoulder blade in a manner police said was consistent with the gunfire from Jennings.
After interviews, a bench warrant was issued for Jennings. Authorities went to his residence and he was not located, but upon further investigation, police returned and found him hiding in the attic. Once located, he was taken into custody without incident.
Police reported finding him in possession of a backpack containing marijuana that appeared to be in packaging for selling.
Jennings refused to speak to detectives regarding the case.
He faces charges including first-degree battery and terroristic act, both Class B felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Additionally, he is being charged with aggravated assault and possession of a schedule VI substance with the purpose to deliver, Class D felonies punishable by up to six years in prison.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
