Woman Faces Numerous Animal Cruelty Charges in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. – A woman was cited on numerous counts of animal cruelty after an incident this week in Jonesboro.

Police responded at 6 PM to the 100-block of East Center Street in Jonesboro to a report of dogs at large, the incident report released by the Jonesboro Police Department said. Officers arrived and noticed two children with a blanket and a five gallon bucket in the front yard of the address. The bucket had paint residue inside of it – along with one dead puppy.

On the blanket spread in the yard was seven other puppies. The dogs had patches of white paint spread on their bodies.

With animal control on the scene, officers directed their attention to the backyard. The mother dog was severely emaciated and inside of a wire kennel that was too small, the report says.

Rashanna Smith, 29, of Jonesboro, was cited on nine misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, according to the report. She was released at the scene. Her next court date is May 13.

As of the next day, three of the puppies had died.
