Prosecutor Achieves Unprecedented Success with Four First-Degree Murder Convictions in a Single Day

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – In a remarkable legal feat, Prosecuting Attorney Sonia F. Hagood announced in a press release on Friday, January 12, that her office secured convictions for four First-Degree Murder cases in a single day.

The notable achievement sends a powerful message to the communities of Crittenden and Mississippi counties.

Hagood expressed pride in her team and law enforcement partners for their dedication to protecting innocent victims and holding violent criminals accountable.

“I cannot think of another time when four convictions of this magnitude were achieved on the very same day.”

In the first case, a Crittenden County jury found Jotavion Ross guilty of Murder in the First Degree, sentencing him to a total of 41 years in prison. Prosecutors presented evidence that Ross chased down and fatally shot Samuel Johnson on December 28, 2022, in West Memphis. Hagood commended the West Memphis Police Department for its diligent investigation, led by Detective Chad Davis and his team.

Simultaneously, a Mississippi County jury found three Blytheville residents guilty of the murder of Javion Sims on April 17, 2021. Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Gina Nelson and Curtis Walker presented evidence showing the defendants’ involvement in a gunfight that claimed Sims’ life. The release said the defendants laid in wait while planning the gunfight. In one minute, more than 75 rounds were fired between the defendants and individuals in another vehicle. One of the bullets struck the victim, who died on the scene.

Joel Williams received a 40-year sentence, while Willavontae Westmorland and Tyree Johnson each received 35 years. Nelson expressed gratitude to the jury, emphasizing that the verdict sends a strong message against senseless acts of violence in Blytheville and Mississippi County.
