JONESBORO, Ark. – A man faces charges including resisting arrest and assault after police say he punched an officer when waking up from a drunken slumber.
It happened around 2 AM Sunday near Market Pl. and Wilkins. Officers were dispatched to an unresponsive person inside of a locked fence behind Kroger. When they arrived, they found a Hispanic male laying down, but breathing. The police report said officers could tell he was obviously intoxicated. They tried to get him up on his own but had to carry him.
That’s where things went bad.
The report says as officers tried to carry the man, he violently pulled away, spun toward Officer Jeremy White and punched him in the left side of the face. The officer drew his taser but the man continued fighting with other officers. It took two deployments but the second shot stuck in the suspect and dropped him. Police say he continued fighting so the taser was used again, this time sapping the remaining fight out of the suspect.
The suspect complied with officers and was medically cleared for jail. Jonathan Morales, 21, of Jonesboro, is facing charges including first degree assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication. He was booked into jail at 1:32 am Sunday, records show, and released at 4:41 PM Monday.
The officer did not report any injuries from being struck in the visible report.
