Over 1,200 early vote on first day for sales tax initiative

JONESBORO, Ark. – 1,235 people early voted Tuesday, September 3, in Jonesboro’s sales tax initiative special election.

That’s according to Craighead County Clerk Kade Holliday, who updated the election totals at the end of the day. 1,229 early voted in Jonesboro and 6 voted in Lake City on day one of voting.

By comparison, in 2016, 1,670 people voted on the first day of early voting. Although several hundred more showed up on the first day for that, it was a presidential election with dozens of races. This special election is on only one issue.

Early voting resumes September 4, 8 AM to 5 PM at the Craighead County Election Annex. After two weeks of early voting, the election day itself will occur – on September 10.

Team Jonesboro’s chairman Scott McDaniel called it a huge first day. He said higher voter turnout favors their efforts to raise the sales tax by one percent.
