Downtown Playhouse to Stage “God’s Favorite”

POCAHONTAS, Ark. – The Downtown Playhouse in Pocahontas will present “God’s Favorite,” with the premier set for Saturday, July 13.  The Neil Simon comedy, based loosely on the Old Testament story of Job, is scheduled to run weekends through August 11.

The play opens with God-fearing tycoon Joe Benjamin living the good life with his family in a Long Island mansion, but trouble is on the way.  As in the biblical story, Joe is sorely tested through a series of afflictions that tempt him to renounce God.

The playhouse encourages churches, Sunday school classes and other religious groups to make plans to attend the performance.

“God’s Favorite” is directed by Kelly Grooms, and it is sponsored by Anderson Refrigeration.

Scheduled performance dates are July 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 and 28, and August 2, 3, 9, 10 and 11.  Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday shows are matinees that begin at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $19.60, including tax, and the cost of admission also covers beverage and dessert.  There is a wide array of hot and cold beverages, and desserts include Turtle Pie, Strawberry Creme Pie, Sock-It-to-Me Pound Cake and Sugar-Free Jello Parfait.

To order tickets or for more information, go to thedowntownplayhouse.com or call 870-758-2282.

The Downtown Playhouse is located at 302 North Marr in Pocahontas.
