JONESBORO, Ark. — A woman faces a felony theft allegation after police say surveillance footage and license plate readers linked her truck to $1,900 in items taken from behind a Jonesboro business.
Cynthia Dawn Huffins appeared in court Friday, Oct. 9, on an allegation of theft of property valued at more than $1,000 but no more than $5,000, a Class D felony, according to first appearance records.
The investigation began Sept. 13, when officers responded to a report of a theft at a business on East Matthews Avenue. Officers were told someone in a white truck pulling a trailer had driven behind the business earlier that morning and taken several items left outside after cleaning, according to a probable cause affidavit dated Oct. 9.
The affidavit says security footage showed a woman getting out of the truck, loading the items onto the trailer and driving away.
A photo of the truck and trailer was shared within the police department. A detective was told the truck belonged to Huffins and used department resources to confirm that its license plate was linked to her, the affidavit states.
Automated license plate readers captured the vehicle pulling the same trailer. The detective also found intersection camera footage showing one of the allegedly stolen freezers still on the trailer, according to the affidavit.
The detective identified Huffins as the woman in the surveillance footage based on prior familiarity with her and her physical description, the affidavit states. Police listed the total value of the items at $1,900.
The court found probable cause and set bond at $7,500 cash or surety on Oct. 9, according to the order.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 23 at the Craighead County Courthouse in Jonesboro, according to the first appearance record.
The allegation has not been proven in court.
