WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The sheriff of Lawrence County has confirmed a suspect is in custody after making threats that a school shooting would be happening this week in Walnut Ridge.
Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Yates confirmed the news to NEA Report at around 1 PM Monday afternoon after authorities spent much of the weekend search for the person responsible for a frightening threat posted to social media. The post claimed a school shooting would happen at Walnut Ridge Middle School. Law enforcement from across the region converged at the school today to ensure safety. While the seriousness of the threat wasn’t confirmed, with tragedies in the news on an almost weekly basis, it was no joke to police.
Now, a juvenile is also learning these are not matters to joke about.
KAIT reports the juvenile was not a student at Walnut Ridge and lived outside of the city limits. This would explain why the sheriff’s department participated in the arrest.
Unless the suspect is charged as an adult, it is unlikely his or her name will be released to the press.
