SCAM: Fake bankers texting customers in NEA

Do not reply, bank warns

MELBOURNE, Ark. – An alert by an area bank is warning customers to beware of scammers pretending to be bankers.

First National Bank of Izard County warned customers on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, that customers were receiving texts from a scammer claiming to be from “Regions Bank.” The scammer apparently asked people to call in to a number regarding their debit card being suspended.

The texts, however, aren’t legit.

FNB warned customers not to reply to these texts or give out any personal information. If you have questions about your debit cards, call your bank directly.

You can also report the offense to the authorities. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for police to locate suspects of such crimes as phony text messages can be sent from real phone numbers through illicit websites. Some businesses in Lawrence County recently reported criminals using their number to call and try to scam victims – even though the scammer had no access to their phone system.
