Jonesboro AmeriCorps VISTAs to Commemorate September 11

JONESBORO, Ark. – Monday, September 11th marks the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In honor of our first responders, City of Jonesboro AmeriCorps VISTA members will join with the Jonesboro Fire Department to paint fire hydrants.

“September 11th is a day of history, emotion, and reflection,” said Emma Agnew, Community Services Manager for the City of Jonesboro and VISTA Project Supervisor. “For many Americans it is also a day of service that provides an opportunity to join neighbors and local leaders in volunteer service to rekindle the compassion and unity shown on that day.”

AmeriCorps VISTA members will join local firefighters in providing a fresh coat of paint for area fire hydrants in need.  Between 11:00 and l: 00 p.m., local firefighters will join VISTA members at Math & Science School.  After an overview of the firefighter’s role in the community and the tragedy that happened on September 11, 2016, students will assist firefighters in painting fire hydrants near the school.

On Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., fire and police officers will share information and visit with the Familie Tiez after school program.

September 11th was designated a national day of service by the 2009 Kennedy Serve America Act. The Corporation for National and Community Service leads the annual event, working with 9/11 Day and hundreds of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, schools, and businesses nationwide.

This year, thousands of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are expected to join their neighbors in delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, signing up as mentors, reading to children, and more.
