PARAGOULD, Ark. – Paragould Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), in collaboration with the Henry Wrinkles Foundation (HWF), held two spay/neuter clinics in September at the PAWS shelter.
Over 45 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens were altered.
PAWS President Laura Wood says, “PAWS and HWF have always had a unified mission of curbing the animal over-population in Greene County; only through spaying and neutering can we address this issue face on.”
The clinic was performed by Dr. Eric Jayne, DVM of Arkansas. Wood says, “Dr. Eric Jayne caught our attention due to his prolific profile. He spent nine years in Alaska as a “Bush Vet” and worked in remote villages performing 50,000 spays and neuters. He attributes his honed skills to the Humane Alliance in Asheville, N.C., a nationwide group that works and trains vets to make smaller incisions for faster surgeries and quicker recovery time, resulting in 35 to 40 animals a day being fixed. Dr. Jayne also assists the Wynne, AR animal shelter.
Wood continued “we still have our in-house vet Dr. Laura Dacus Daniels, DVM for our PAWS adoptions and HWF alters, but we had this opportunity to have two mass clinics with Dr. Jayne and we were very fortunate. Special thanks to our newly appointed Shelter Director and volunteer April Schmidt Medlin, who spent countless hours coordinating the event and all the volunteers that assisted – William Sanders, April Floyd, Jaree Johnson, Alexia Mohr, Hannah Lewis, Ruth Scroggin & Kimberly Moore-Ortiz.”
PAWS has a a low-cost spay neuter voucher program for elderly, disabled or low-income families in conjunction with local participating veterinarians Veterinary Healtcare Clinic & Hilltop Animal Clinic and qualifying participants can contact the shelter at 870-240-0997 for an application.
