JONESBORO, Ark. – It is one of Jonesboro’s busiest roads and Tuesday afternoon on Johnson Avenue in Jonesboro, an unattended 1-year-old baby was found stumbling down the sidewalk.
Names are not being released but the description in the Jonesboro police incident report is concerning. Police were dispatched at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday afternoon to the 300-block of East Johnson Avenue. A woman had found a young baby walking down the sidewalk, westbound, with no one nearby. She reported he was unsteady on his feet. She stopped and called police.
Police made contact with multiple juveniles who said they were cousins to the baby. They said their auntie, the child’s mother, was watching the child when he wandered off and they since had been looking for him. The officer determined the 1-year-old attempted to follow his cousins to a store when he became lost.
The mother arrived on the scene, as did the Department of Human Services (DHS). Because of “the extreme potential of death or injuries from this incident,” DHS decided to take the baby, along with the two cousins, also minors, in fear for their safety.
The mother faces a charge of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree, a misdemeanor.
