JONESBORO, Ark. – It began as a traffic stop but it escalated far further than that once the incident was all over.
Jonesboro police officer Justin Thompson began to stop a red pickup truck at Main Street and Word Street in Jonesboro Thursday night around 9:20 p.m. However, once he switched his lights on, the suspect, later identified as Tommy Eugene Hunter, 41, of Jonesboro, speed up and began to flee, Thompson wrote in the incident report.
After a short drive and once he turned onto 4th Street, the suspect jumped out of the truck, while it was still in motion, and ran on foot. The vehicle crashed into a light pole while Hunter ran with Officer Thompson in pursuit.
The officer lost sight of Hunter, who apparently ran into a residence. A nearby resident told officers he was threatened by the suspect if he did not allow him inside. Hunter was arrested shortly afterward.
While searching the car, officers found a small purple cloth bag with a baggie of crystal methamphetamine.
Hunter faces charges of careless and prohibited driving, no seat belt, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, and fleeing. He is also being charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and had a warrant for absconding, as well.
