JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State University has been named a top school for military veterans by U.S. Veterans Magazine, with the university crediting the Beck Center for Veterans as part of its efforts to support veterans and military-connected students.
The center, launched with initial funding from alumni Buddy and Charlotte Beck, helps veterans navigate education benefits, find campus resources and address problems that could interfere with their studies.
More than 1,000 military veterans have earned associate, bachelor’s and technical degrees since the center was established nearly two decades ago, according to the university.
“The university has gone above and beyond in advocating for veteran students,” said Johnathon A. Mullins, a veteran and graduate student who works at the Beck Center. “I do not necessarily think that is exclusively because they are veterans. My impression is that we have people in positions of authority who genuinely want to do the right thing by students.”
Helping Veterans Find Support
Mullins said the recognition could help more students learn about services they may not know are available, including veterans who do not use Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits.
“The more our name is out there, the more students become aware of us, and ultimately that helps us fulfill our goal of helping veterans stay in school and successfully navigate their academic journey,” he said.
Mullins said senior university leaders have worked to resolve student problems brought to their attention.
“You do not have to know exactly who to call, which office handles something, or even what question you need to ask,” he said. “Come and see us. If we cannot solve the problem ourselves, we will help you find the people who can.”
Free Services and a Place to Connect
The Beck Center assists both on-campus and online students with education benefits and provides a dedicated space for student veterans.
“Everything we offer through the Beck Center is available free of charge,” Mullins said. “We also try to make it a place where students actually want to spend time. They can come in and use the printer, find a quiet place to study, or just lie back on one of the couches and watch a movie between classes.”
The center also serves veterans in the surrounding community, according to the university. Its staff includes director Jana Haskins.
To qualify for assistance through the center, veterans must provide a DD214 or other proof of combat-era military service, according to the university. Staff members can help them through the process.
The center holds fundraisers throughout the year, including a golf tournament and a 5K.
