JONESBORO, Ark. — Two women face felony theft allegations after police say one distracted a cashier while the other pushed two shopping carts containing more than $1,000 in merchandise out of a Jonesboro department store without paying.
Telyshia Sharyan Hill and Carolyn Jean Moore each face allegations of organized retail theft and theft of property valued at more than $1,000 but no more than $5,000, according to first-appearance records. Both offenses are listed as Class D felonies.
Jonesboro police responded to the store Oct. 17 after a report of shoplifting, according to probable cause affidavits signed by Detective Dustin Mitchell on Oct. 19. The affidavits do not identify the department store.
Police allege Moore approached a cashier and requested help in an aisle while Hill pushed two full shopping carts past the point of sale without paying. The merchandise was valued at $1,032.21.
Hill then attempted to load the merchandise into a Lincoln Navigator, but witnesses intervened, according to the affidavits. Both women got into the vehicle and fled, police allege.
Officers later located the women in the same vehicle. They matched descriptions provided by witnesses and were taken into custody, according to the affidavits.
During what the affidavits describe as a probation search of the vehicle, officers found additional merchandise that appeared to have been stolen from other businesses. The documents do not identify those businesses or list a value for the additional merchandise.
Bond was set Oct. 19 at $15,000 cash or surety for each woman. Both are scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 23 at the Craighead County Courthouse in Jonesboro.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
