JONESBORO, Ark. — A woman accused of stealing more than $400 worth of merchandise from a Jonesboro store faces a felony theft charge after police said she had been convicted in 11 previous theft-related cases.
Stacy Denise Ware is charged with theft of $1,000 or less, second offense, a Class D felony.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers responded Sept. 6 to a store in the 3000 block of East Highland Drive after receiving a report of a theft in progress. Dispatchers told responding officers that a woman had been confronted by employees before leaving in a silver Jeep Renegade with a pink steering wheel cover.
The complainant told police that when Ware entered the store, he immediately recognized her from a previous case. Police said Ware pulled out two large Target bags and began filling them with merchandise.
When Ware allegedly attempted to leave without paying, employees confronted her. Police said she fled to the Jeep and left the area.
The merchandise was valued at $416.74. According to the affidavit, all of the items were recovered after Ware dropped them while fleeing.
Officers later located Ware driving the vehicle described by employees and arrested her.
The affidavit states Ware had been convicted of theft-related offenses in 11 prior cases, with the most recent conviction occurring June 11. Authorities said that history resulted in the latest allegation being charged as theft of $1,000 or less, second offense.
Ware appeared in Craighead County Circuit Court, where bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 26 at 8:30 a.m.
A Class D felony carries a potential sentence of up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to the court documents.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
