JONESBORO, Ark. — Part of South Main Street in downtown Jonesboro was closed Friday afternoon after a portion of a building’s front column fell onto the sidewalk.
The incident happened at approximately 1:30 p.m. at 219 S. Main St., according to a release from the City of Jonesboro. Part of the front column of the two-story building separated from the structure and fell.
No injuries were reported. The city said the debris was neither large nor extensive, but the building was evacuated while structural engineers assessed its condition.
Initial assessments indicated that stabilization work, described by the city as a common repair for older masonry buildings, should resolve the issue. Officials do not expect the closure to be long-term, although a timeline for the repairs has not been established.
The 200 block of South Main Street is closed to vehicles from Huntington Avenue to Cate Avenue. Pedestrians may continue through the area as long as they remain outside the safety-tape buffer.
The city said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
