PARAGOULD, Ark. — A man was arrested after police said he took more than $23,000 for a construction job and never started the work.
Terry Hammett, 49, was arrested for theft of property, a Class C felony, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Paragould Police Department.
The case began June 8, when the victim filed a theft report with police. The victim told investigators they had hired Hammett to build a commercial building on East Kingshighway and gave him $23,750 as a down payment. The victim said Hammett was supposed to begin work April 7.
According to the affidavit, Hammett deposited the check on April 8 but never started the job.
During the investigation, police said they discovered Hammett had been investigated in Fulton County and Lawrence County for similar allegations. Both affidavits showed he had been hired for construction jobs, received large down payments, and never started or completed the work, according to police.
Judge Curtis Hitt set Hammett’s bond at $23,750 cash and entered a no-contact order.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
