JONESBORO, Ark. – A simple traffic stop led authorities to recover a stolen vehicle and make two arrests over the weekend in Jonesboro. But the two people who were arrested are not being charged with vehicle theft.
The traffic stop itself happened around 7:39 PM on January 5 near the intersection of Red Wolf Boulevard and Johnson Avenue. Officer Joshua Chaffin noticed a tag light out and couldn’t read the tag on the vehicle.
Police made contact with two suspects, both of whom had warrants for their arrest. The driver had a suspended license as well. After a VIN check, police learned the vehicle was reported stolen by Memphis Police Department.
Randall King, 55, and Sara Kregul, 26, both of Jonesboro, were arrested during the stop. King was arrested for probation revocation, an FTA warrant, and theft by receiving. Kregul was arrested for FTA, tampering with evidence, and possession of a schedule IV substance after the report alleges she hid marijuana in a body cavity.
Although police had arrested King for theft by receiving for the vehicle, King had actually presented police with a bill of sale from Car Choice. Sure enough, the next day, the manager of Car Choice contacted police, the report said. They had acquired the vehicle out of Olive Branch, MS and were not aware of it being listed as a stolen vehicle. The manager said King did, in fact, legally lease the vehicle through them.
On Monday, a detective amended the report to drop the charge of theft by receiving.
As of Tuesday, both suspects remain in jail on the other charges.
