Murder suspect has surrendered

A manhunt was called off when the suspect surrendered Tuesday after one person was shot and killed in a dispute in Augusta, a press release from Arkansas State Police.

Anfernee Neal, 25, of Augusta surrendered to Arkansas State Police this afternoon and has been transported to the Woodruff County Jail.

Neal is charged with 1st degree murder in connection with the death of Jaquale Mitchell, 27, of Augusta, who was shot outside an apartment building yesterday.

The exchange of gunfire occurred about 5 PM outside a Fairfield Street apartment in Augusta. Mitchell died a short time later at a White County hospital.

Local law enforcement authorities have requested the Arkansas State Police to investigate the incident.

Witnesses told state police special agents there was an argument between Mitchell and Neal followed by both men shooting at each other.

Augusta police, along with other law enforcement agencies, assisted by state police, were searching for Neal before he turned himself.
