WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Felix Goodson Library at Williams Baptist University is set to host a Scholastic Book Fair October 30 – November 3. The event offers specially priced books and educational products, including picture books for the youngest children, early reading books, upper elementary books, mid-level reading books, YA books for high school students, fiction and nonfiction books for adults, Christian books and holiday-themed books.
The Book Fair will be open to everyone during regular library hours, which are Tuesday through Thursday 8am – 11:30pm, Friday from 8am – 4pm, and 10:00am – 4:00pm on Saturday, Nov. 3, which is WBU Homecoming.
The ministry project this year is to collect books for a program called SafeCare. The library is joining with WBU’s Psi Chi organization to collect as many books as possible for families of children five years of age and younger.
The program helps train families on how to better care for their young children by encouraging the families to sit down together and having the parents read books to their children, thus creating a healthy and bonding family unit.
“SafeCare is a worldwide program that provides training to parents who have a DCFS case open for a child birth-5 years old,” said WBU alumna and Northeast Arkansas SafeCare Coordinator, Maddie Mead. “It is a research based, preventative program that trains the parents in three areas: safety, health, and parent/child interaction. For each section of the program, we provide the family with some materials to help them learn. For the parent/child interaction module, SafeCare would like to provide children’s books due to the research on benefits of reading to children at a young age. I look forward to Williams getting involved and helping this program grow and change live.”
All of the books donated through Psi Chi and Felix Goodson Library will remain in Northeast Arkansas. The goal this year is to donate 50 books to the project. For more information on the library, visit williamsbu.edu/library.
