Jonesboro council approves land buy for range

Shooting complex to be first of its kind in Arkansas

JONESBORO, Ark. – A shooting sports complex moved one step closer to a reality for City of Jonesboro after Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Ordinance 17:078 was approved Tuesday night by the Jonesboro City Council. It authorized the purchase of property located on Moore Road for a shooting complex. Previous reports estimated the cost of the land to be around $1.27 million.

The video was made available online by the City of Jonesboro.

The planned 208-acre complex would include nine shotgun fields, rifle and pistol ranges, and different archery ranges, too. Estimates have put the cost of the facility somewhere between $5 million to $12 million.

Originally discussed as a new range for police, the idea was expanded after city officials learned the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission would pay for 75-percent of the construction. The condition was that it be open to the public. A Memorandum of Understanding has been formally approved with AGFC regarding the purchase and their commitment.

The mayor must still get formal signatures for grant documents. City officials hope to close on the land by the end of 2017.
