Woman loses $4500 in gift cards to the "IRS"

JONESBORO, Ark. – A woman was scammed out of thousands after she said a suspect posing as an IRS agent demanded she send them gift cards.

At about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jonesboro police were dispatched to the 3400-block of Quail Ridge about the scam. They made contact with the complainant, 40, who said she got a call from someone claiming to be an employee of the Internal Revenue Service. The scammer told her she owed $4,500 in back taxes. The caller instructed the woman to put $4,500 on several gift cards and to give the callers the numbers over the phone.

The report said the woman complied with the request and sent them the digital money.

Boldly, the scammers called back asking for another $8,000 on Monday. The woman realized she was being bilked and contacted police.

If captured, the suspect would face felony theft charges. Considering the perpetrator could be anywhere, this is an unlikely outcome for law enforcement dealing with scam reports.

Anyone with information about the case may contact the Jonesboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at (870) 935-6710 or Crime Stoppers at 935-7867 (935-STOP.)
