JONESBORO, Ark. – An argument between two family members led to an apparent stabbing and the arrest of a man already wanted by police Thursday.
At around midnight Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, officers responded to the Willow Creek Apartments to a call about a fight with weapons. There, officers were told Andriek Newson, 20, of Jonesboro, had been in a fight with Alvin James, 35, also of Jonesboro.
Newson, still agitated with officers standing next to him, was initially arrested for a felony failure to appear warrant out of Mississippi County.
James did not want to press charges but appeared to be having issues breathing. Officers checked the man out and found a stab wound, possibly into his lung.
Newson told officers he stabbed James because he was trying to defend his aunt, who he thought James was physically assaulting in the bedroom, according to the report. With James outsizing the smaller Newson, he felt his only option was the weapon.
The fight spilled into the living room of the house, knocking over a couch, and then into the parking lot, before James wife was able to separate the two.
Newson was transported to Craighead County Detention Center to be charged with felony domestic battery II and felony aggravated assault on a family or household member. He must also face his felony warrant out of Mississippi County.
