JONESBORO, Ark. — Those worried about misuse of Flock cameras have good news:
The Jonesboro Police Department says no misuse of its Flock system has been reported to date, and no disciplinary actions, reprimands or write-ups related to the system have been generated.
Sally Smith, the department’s public information official, provided the response Monday, Oct. 12, after NEA Report inquired over the weekend.
“Through our checks and balances, we have no misuse of the system reported,” Smith said. “No disciplinary actions, reprimands, or write-ups pertaining to FLOCK have been generated.”
Flock’s license plate readers capture still images of vehicles and record information including license plate numbers, vehicle characteristics and timestamps, according to the company. The information can be searched to help identify vehicles during investigations.
NEA Report reported in July that Jonesboro’s Flock network had expanded to 54 cameras, according to police. At the time, police credited the technology with helping locate missing people and investigate serious crimes, while some residents raised concerns about privacy and the potential for misuse.
