PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould man is accused of striking an officer in the face with his head and kicking another officer during a Sept. 29 arrest, according to an affidavit filed in Greene County District Court.
Douglas Hedrick faces allegations of second-degree battery, a Class D felony, and four misdemeanors stemming from the encounter. A court order dated Sept. 29 set his bond at $100,000 surety or another form acceptable to the Greene County sheriff.
According to the affidavit signed by Paragould police Detective Lt. Jack Hailey, patrol officers were dispatched to a residence on South 13th Avenue after receiving a report that Hedrick had returned to a property from which he had been barred earlier that day.
While heading to the call, officers found Hedrick walking down the street carrying property that had been seen at the residence, the affidavit states. The document does not list a theft allegation.
Officers reported a strong odor of intoxicants and took Hedrick into custody for public intoxication, according to the affidavit.
As an officer attempted to search Hedrick’s pocket, Hedrick “lurched suddenly” and struck the officer’s face with the crown of his head, the affidavit alleges. Police reported swelling and redness on the officer’s left cheekbone.
An assisting officer then escorted Hedrick to a patrol vehicle. While the officer tried to get him inside, Hedrick allegedly kicked the officer in the chest and resisted entering the vehicle. That officer reported the kicks did not cause an injury, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit lists one count each of second-degree battery, interference with a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, public intoxication and criminal trespass. Interference and resisting arrest are listed as Class A misdemeanors; public intoxication and criminal trespass are listed as Class C misdemeanors.
The court found probable cause for an arrest warrant. In addition to the bond, the order requires Hedrick to comply with ankle monitor requirements, possess no weapons and have no contact with victims, witnesses or other people involved in the case.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
