JONESBORO, Ark. — Fidell E. Mitchell faces two felony charges after police said a probation search uncovered suspected methamphetamine before he ran from officers.
At about 4:46 a.m. Wednesday, Officers Johnson and Martin contacted Mitchell as he walked near Melrose and Belt streets, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Officers knew Mitchell was on active probation and contacted him because of vehicle break-ins in the area, the affidavit said. The filing does not allege Mitchell was involved in those break-ins.
During a probation search, police said they found a glass pipe with burn marks in Mitchell’s pants pocket and a small amount of a white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine in his wallet.
When Martin attempted to handcuff Mitchell, police said he fled on foot. Officers caught Mitchell and took him to the ground before arresting him. Police seized the pipe and 1.05 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
Mitchell is charged with possession of methamphetamine or cocaine, less than 2 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia, both Class D felonies. He also faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing and resisting arrest.
Special Judge Ralph Wilson set Mitchell’s bond at $25,000 cash or surety. His next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 30 at the Craighead County Courthouse.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
