WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — Arkansas State Police is investigating the death of a West Memphis man who became unresponsive after being arrested and taken to the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department.
The case is one of two unrelated in-custody deaths under investigation by ASP. The other occurred earlier this month in Fayetteville.
West Memphis police responded Sunday, July 26, to a report that a man was attempting to break into an ambulance at Crittenden Baptist Hospital, according to ASP.
When officers arrived, police said 40-year-old Tony Sanders fled on foot into a field west of the hospital. Officers apprehended Sanders and arrested him on charges of fleeing and disorderly conduct.
Sanders was transported to the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department, where he became unresponsive. Officers performed CPR and contacted Crittenden County EMS.
Sanders was taken to Crittenden Baptist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The West Memphis Police Department requested assistance from ASP following Sanders’ death.
In the separate case, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office requested ASP assistance July 15 following the death of 36-year-old Jordan Ferchow of Fayetteville.
Ferchow was processed into the Washington County Detention Center around 12:15 a.m. after being arrested by the University of Arkansas Police Department. ASP said the arrest involved driving with a suspended license during a DWI suspension and multiple traffic violations.
Ferchow later displayed symptoms of possible drug ingestion and was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead.
ASP said both investigations remain ongoing. No additional information was released.
