Lyon College Summer Camp to Explore Life Beneath the Surface

BATESVILLE, Arkansas — Students with a curiosity for biology, aquatic life and hands-on science will have the opportunity to explore everything from microscopic microbes to axolotls during an upcoming summer camp at Lyon College.

“From Microbes to Axolotls,” a weeklong science camp for students entering grades 7-12, is set for June 1-5 from 1-4:30 p.m. in Room 113 of the Derby Center for Science and Mathematics on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville.

Designed for curious young scientists, the camp will introduce students to the hidden world of aquatic organisms through interactive lectures, laboratory activities and guided dissections. Participants will study microscopic protists under the microscope, investigate the anatomy of fish and amphibians, and learn how aquatic organisms survive in challenging environments.

The course will also explore biological concepts such as respiration, movement, and osmoregulation, the process organisms use to maintain proper water and salt balance.

Dr. Maryline Jones, associate professor of biology and Natural Sciences division chair at Lyon College, said students will gain practical laboratory experience while developing a deeper appreciation for the diversity and complexity of aquatic ecosystems.

The camp is ideal for students interested in biology, animal science and environmental studies.

The cost is $150.
