Brookland Suspect Faces 20 Counts of CSAM

BROOKLAND, Ark. — A Brookland suspect was arrested this week after police said a search warrant led to the discovery of child sexual abuse material.

Gustavo Angel Cruz, 19, of Brookland, was arrested by the Jonesboro Police Department on 20 counts of distributing, possessing or viewing matter depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child, according to jail records. Each charge is a class B felony punishable by 5 to 20 years in prison.

A probable cause affidavit from JPD said detectives with the department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Division, along with the 2nd Judicial Drug Task Force, executed a search warrant at a residence in Brookland. The affidavit lists the date as April 29, though jail records show Cruz was arrested April 28.

According to the affidavit, an arrest warrant had already been obtained for Cruz for possession or use of child sexual abuse material after police said he uploaded 20 images and videos of young children engaged in sex acts.

Cruz was at the residence and was arrested without incident, police said.

During the search, investigators seized computers and phones from the residence. Detectives conducted a quick on-scene triage of a computer and located child sexual abuse material, according to the affidavit.

Cruz was transported to the Craighead County Detention Center.

Bond was set at $150,000 cash or surety Wednesday afternoon by District Judge David Boling. Cruz was also ordered not to have access to any internet-enabled devices, including cellphones, gaming devices or similar electronics.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
