PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould suspect was arrested after police said he drove away from a traffic stop, failed to stop at an intersection and then parked at a residence, where officers identified him and took him into custody.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Ptl. Bartelson first observed a 2002 black Honda Accord around midnight April 22 after the vehicle turned southbound onto South 14th Avenue from East Court Street.
The affidavit states the officer observed the vehicle make a turn that caused another driver to stop at the intersection of South 14th Avenue and East Court Street to avoid being struck. After turning around to investigate, the officer reported the vehicle then pulled onto East Kingshighway, turned westbound and continued through several streets.
Police said the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at South 13th Avenue and East Court Street. The affidavit states the officer activated his emergency lights, but the vehicle appeared to speed up and continue eastbound on East Court Street before turning northbound on North 18th Avenue.
According to the affidavit, the officer attempted to stop the vehicle again near North 18th Avenue and West Watkins Street. Police said the Honda then turned onto North 18 1/2 Avenue and backed crooked into the driveway of a home in the 200 block of North 18 1/2 Avenue.
When the officer approached the vehicle, the driver was no longer inside, according to the affidavit. The report states officers found a pink cellphone, a pair of women’s shoes in the driver’s floorboard and miscellaneous property in the passenger seat.
Police said they then made contact with people at the home. The affidavit states a man later identified as Kaireik Burgess, 26, stepped outside after officers spoke with others at the residence. The officer reported immediately recognizing Burgess as the driver from the traffic stop.
According to the affidavit, Burgess denied being the driver and refused to provide his name at first. Police said he was later identified and taken into custody.
Burgess was booked into the Greene County Detention Center on charges of fleeing in a vehicle, obstructing governmental operations, driving on a suspended license, failing to obey a stop sign and operating a vehicle without a license plate.
His bail was set at $5,000 with conditions that he use no alcohol or drugs and live a law-abiding life.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
