Paragould Woman Faces Felony Animal Cruelty After Emaciated Dog Found on Property

PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould woman is facing a felony charge after police reported finding a severely malnourished dog tied up outside her residence.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers were responding to a separate call on Aug. 1 when they noticed a dog on a neighboring property that appeared extremely emaciated and had no visible food. A nearby bucket contained some water, but it also had grass in it, authorities said.

Police made contact with the dog’s owner, identified as Samantha Vaughn. After waiving her rights under Miranda, Vaughn told detectives the dog had parvo and that she fed it twice a day, according to the affidavit.

Animal Control officers also responded and advised detectives that the dog was suffering from severe malnutrition and would need veterinary care in an attempt to save it.

Vaughn, 28, was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat or equine — a Class D felony under Arkansas law. Judge Dan Stidham set her bail at $10,000 cash or surety.

All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
