JONESBORO, Ark. — Two men face first-degree murder charges stemming from a January shooting after arrests earlier this week in Craighead County.
Christopher Daveon Smith, 26, of Trumann, was arrested at 7:41 a.m. on Feb. 10, records with the Craighead County Detention Center show. A $1 million temporary bond was set for his release, pending his probable cause hearing Feb. 12. At the PC hearing, Judge Tommy Fowler made the temporary bail permanent. A no-contact order was issued and a requirement was made for a GPS ankle monitor.
The probable cause affidavit states that at about 10:07 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2025, JPD received a phone call referencing an unresponsive person in the parking lot of 111 Daybreak. Officers arrived and found a victim with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the face. The victim, Derrick Johnson, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Detectives learned Johnson was driving around in a gray charger with Terry Wofford and Christopher Daveon Smith. At about 8 p.m., they left a residence on Henry and were headed to Trumann. At 9:44 p.m., the vehicle pulled into 111 Daybreak. A male in a white hoodie was observed being on the passenger side of the vehicle. Smith was determined to be the suspect in the white hoodie. A large amount of blood was observed in the front driver’s side of the vehicle where the victim would have been.
Police noted once at the address on Henry, Smith was observed sitting with his head in his hands making statements that he was going back to prison for this.
“Since then, Smith has avoided all possible contact with law enforcement,” wrote Detective Christopher Pigg.
During a Mirandized interview, Smith is alleged to have stated it was he and Terry Wofford in the vehicle. He claimed Wofford shot the victim as soon as they backed into the parking lot. Smith said he believed Wofford used Smith’s gun to shoot him.
Smith is a co-defendant, Deputy Prosecutor Heather Owens noted in court Wednesday. The other co-defendant, Terry Rashard Wofford, 24, of Marked Tree, is being held on a $2.5 million bond after his arrest on Feb. 3.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
