WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Lawrence County Detention Center.
Derrick Wayne Metz, 42, of Walnut Ridge, passed away on Sunday, August 25, while in the custody of the detention center, Sgt. Jamie White from the sheriff’s office confirmed to NEA Report. Metz was transported to the hospital before he passed away, the sergeant said.
In the interest of transparency, the Arkansas State Police have been asked to investigate the case.
Online records show Metz was booked on charges including possession of meth, tampering with physical evidence, obstruction of governmental operations, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Arkansas Department of Public Safety Communications Director Cindy Murphy confirmed that ASP had begun an investigation at the request of the sheriff’s office.
“I can confirm that ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division was requested and that this is an active investigation,” Murphy said.
