MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man who was wanted for cutting off his ankle monitor and failing to appear in court for his trial is dead in what law enforcement officials believe was a suicide.
Tyler R. Watkins, 29, of Marion, was found with a gunshot wound Saturday in South Memphis, Action News 5 reports. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Watkins had been wanted out of Crittenden County after not showing up for his trial on charges of rape and other sex crimes.
Last week, a Crittenden County jury sentenced Watkins to life in prison on charges including rape. Additionally, he was found guilty of several computer child pornography charges, resulting in seven consecutive terms totaling 176 years for these offenses.
Authorities had been actively searching for Watkins after he cut off his ankle monitor and skipped his court appearance.
