Report: Teen aimed gun at another student while at school

JONESBORO, Ark. – A teenager was pulled out of a classroom, found to have a handgun, and arrested Wednesday in Jonesboro after a report said the suspect pointed the firearm at another student.

It happened between 2 and 2:30 PM on January 4 at Jonesboro High School, 301 Hurricane Drive. The alleged victim, 17, said he was excused to go to the restroom from class. He told police when he entered the restroom, the suspect, 15, reached into his right pocket, pulled out a gun, and pointed it at him as if he would shoot him. The suspect then allegedly pulled the slide on the firearm and showed the victim the gun was loaded. The victim said that the suspect then laughed and stepped away from him, so he left the restroom.

The victim took the appropriate steps, notifying an adult who then contacted the school resource officer for JHS, JPD Officer Rayonica Thomas. Both the officer and the adult located the suspect in a classroom and escorted him out. The officer patted down the young man and a solid object hit her knuckles. It was a Jennings .22 caliber pistol, found in the right pocket of basketball shorts the teen had on underneath his joggers.

The officer removed the firearm, removed the magazine, and ejected a bullet out of the chamber. The juvenile suspect was arrested for possession of a firearm on school property and aggravated assault and taken to the Craighead County Juvenile Detention Center.

Officers noted the gun had an orange button on the rear of the firearm. CID checked the firearm and tested it, successfully firing two shots from the gun. A check of the NCIC database to see if the gun was stolen came back negative.

The case has been turned over to the Craighead County Juvenile Office. The report said the suspect was already on probation with the juvenile office.
