Newport man killed in wreck Monday in Independence County

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. – A tragic traffic accident claimed a young man’s life Monday afternoon in Independence County.

Monday afternoon, a 1997 Jeep traveled south on Highway 69, south of Newark. Arkansas State Police report that at 1:25 PM Monday, the Jeep crossed the center line of Highway 69.

At the same time, a 2012 Freightliner truck with trailer was traveling northbound on Highway 69. The Jeep struck the side of the Freightliner’s trailer and rear tandems.

Michael Matteson, 18, of Newport, was killed in the accident.

No others were reported injured in the accident.

Weather conditions were cloudy but roads were dry at the time of the accident.
