Boozman: Explanation needed for Comey firing

WASHINGTON – In a statement to the press, an Arkansas U.S. Senator said Americans deserve to know why the FBI director was abruptly fired Tuesday.

U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) issued a statement Wednesday about President Donald Trump’s dismissal of James Comey as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“Americans deserve a full explanation as to the circumstances of the decision to immediately remove Mr. Comey from his post,” Boozman said in a statement. “Our country has lost faith in many of our institutions and a better public accounting of this situation, along with a thorough and fair confirmation process for the next FBI Director, can help restore some of that broken trust.”

The statement is the first of such from the Republican senator openly challenging the President on a decision since Trump took office this year. Boozman even discussed the investigation into Russian meddling with the 2016 Presidential election.

“The Russian investigations will continue,” Boozman said. “I have full confidence in my colleagues and the professional staff leading the investigation by the Senate Intelligence Committee.”

Boozman praised the work by the FBI, calling it “vital to the safety and security of our nation.” He also praised Comey, personally.

“I am grateful for James Comey’s integrity and service during his tenure as the bureau’s director, despite being placed in some very difficult situations over the past year,” Boozman said.
